BANGKOK BOX @ Crystal Palace Park Market
Discover real Thai street food from BANGKOK BOX at Crystal Palace Park Market between 10am and 3pm.
This historic park dating back to Victorian England has a fascinatingly rich history. The Crystal Palace and Park were originally built between 1852 and 1855 by Sir Joseph Paxton's Crystal Palace Company. The park played host to its first major event called the Festival of Empire in 1911. Here, an Inter-Empire athletics championship was held, making Crystal Palace Park the birthplace of the Commonwealth Games!
The Crystal Palace itself was destroyed by fire in 1936 and never rebuilt, but the park continued to play its role in British history. It proved to be an important site during the Second World War, before hosting motorsports and huge concerts by legendary artists such as Bob Marley, Pink Floyd, and The Rolling Stones.
It was in the 1960s that the Crystal Palace National Sports Centre and Athletics Stadium were established, and Crystal Palace became the home of UK athletics and events. The facility attracted international and televised competitions featuring sporting stars including Usain Bolt. But the facilities fell into disrepair due to a lack of investment and the loss of major events to the 2012 Olympic Stadium.
Crystal Palace National Sports Centre
Today, at over 170 years old, Crystal Place Park is getting a makeover! A multi-million pound regeneration project is being co-delivered by Bromley Council and the Crystal Palace Park Trust, an independent, community-led charity that became the park’s custodian in 2023. The combination of this investment and community-led custodianship will undoubtfully ensure the park continues to make its mark on British culture for another century. Additionally, the Mayor of London and Greater London Authority (GLA) appointed Morgan Sindall Construction to transform the iconic Crystal Palace National Sports Centre and Athletics Stadium into the home of UK athletics once more. This redevelopment is due to be completed in 2028.
Crystal Palce Park Market
The weekly food market takes place on Sunday between 10am and 3pm. Like many others in the area, the food market was born out of a local community initiative in 2020 with a strong focus on sustainable, locally sourced food. Visitors will find a wide range of international street food cuisines and artisanal food on offer, with all the traders located along a tree-lined path near the lower lake.
At BANGKOK BOX, we love being part of both the history and community of Crystal Palace.
We can’t wait to see you there.
