Victoria Park is London’s oldest public park with a long and rich history spanning over 170 years. The 86 hectare site first opened in 1845 for the benefit of the East End working class. It immediately became affectionately known as ‘The People’s Park’ because at that time, it was an essential facility. However, this affection has transcended generations, and today’s local residents still see Victoria Park in much the same way. In fact, while Victoria Park has demonstrated an extraordinary ability to adapt to the needs of the people over the years, it also hasn’t forgotten any part of it’s history, and the result is a charming blend of old and new. For instance, a Victorian toilet block may have been transformed into a coffee spot, but the lake is still home to the oldest model boat club in the world.
Today, Victoria Park is one of the most visited parks in London, enjoyed by over 9 million visitors each year who take part in a range of community activities, events, live music and sports on offer in the vast open spaces. More recently, Victoria Park has become an increasingly popular venue for open-air music festivals, often linked with some kind of a socio-political cause. Perhaps this seemingly coincidental link is actually a nod to a period in Victoria Park’s history when Speakers Corners became a hub for political meetings and rallies.
Established in 2017, Victoria Park Market has been a huge hit with the locals. But it’s also consistently ranked alongside London’s top food markets, so attracts visitors from all over the world. Visitors will discover more than 60 traders and an array of street food, artisan food products, groceries and drinks. There really is something for everyone.
